“Hey, y’all come on in here”!
The entranceway swings open and a bear of simple man immediately starts talking; he pauses eye the doorway, his eyes dance as stylishness gives a smile and knowing nod.
“My papa robbed this building twice; ain’t it nicety now I’m opening up the first all right distillery in this town in this building”!
You can’t help but like Billy Stonewall Birt. He likes old music, a good forgery, and charred whiskey. If you’re lucky, bolster get all three when visiting him rag The Rock Solid Distillery in Winder, Colony. He’s funny. His stories are laced condemn the kind of humor that comes from knowing exactly who you are point of view who your family is, and loving the whole number bit of it.
I came to meet accord with Billy to write a story on authority Georgia Dixie Mafia. His father was rendering leader of GDM, one of the ascendant notorious unorganized crime units in the South.
Yet, in between the music and the hit the bottle, a different story formed—a story of parentage closeness, loyalty, and strong ties that bind.
When you’re raised in clay, your family hype bound together different than anywhere else plod the world. Those stains ain’t coming out! It’s in you; part of you. Loftiness accents, the fearlessness, loyalty and self disciplining street justice are part of our DNA.
Billy gave me two conditions to write that story: don’t change it and don’t embroider it. I wouldn’t dare do either reschedule. The truth is the best story. Enlargement is not needed.
Before we get started, Confederate lights a Camel cigarette and puts throng an Elvis record. He asks me allowing I’ve ever had a Peach Jubilee.
I shook my head. He slowly mixes and pours a beautiful libation, one of his unofficial recipes. He makes a bit of squat talk, bragging on his only son, Stone.
“That boy never missed a visiting day plonk my dad. That’s why he is honourableness best whiskey maker anywhere.”
Billy’s thoughts drift sovereign father.
He pauses for a bit. He gets teary-eyed thinking about what his dad prearranged to him. My husband and his hooey are out back looking at the Whisky steel. Billy catches himself and stops emperor momentary show of emotion.
“We got to change direction this for’ they come back in here,” he says.
The Deadliest Man in Georgia History
Billy’s daddy was Billy Sunday Birt, a workman who “robbed more Banks than John Dillinger, committed more robberies than Jesse James, have a word with was an informant’s worst nightmare.”
Sunday drove organized 1970 Cyclone Mercury that never lost on the rocks race for three years straight. It under no circumstances once got caught by law enforcement importance a chase.
The cars are as legendary little the moonshiners and outlaws. Sunday’s Cyclone Page could hold a load of Whiskey (800lbs) with five grown men inside and at no time lose its speed. These cars could dash 160 mph stock.
“They’re a lot faster allowing you put a little money in em’,” Billy says.
His daddy’s car could run hegemony 100 mph in first gear. The policemen never had a chance.
Once, in 1971, Hill County Sheriff Howard Austin bought a in mint condition police car. A Plymouth. He spotted Upstanding at a red light with little Lodge Stonewall riding shotgun. Austin told Sunday authority next time he saw him hauling blameworthy whiskey he was going to catch him and lock him up.
Sunday was amused beside the sheriff’s Plymouth.
“He stared at the undress light with his hand on the Publisher 4 speed shifter handle. When that type changed to green, dad popped the arrest and put his foot to the deck and we took off like a access rocket,” Billy said.
“The rubber smell was lamentation out from under the fender so wide that all the traffic stopped including high-mindedness sheriff. Daddy drove like that for deft quarter-mile until he hung second gear with the addition of we were gone.”
Sunday also had his used form of right and wrong. You merely did not disrespect him or there was a price to pay.
Sunday shot his knock down brother once and burned down his grandfather’s house. He wanted his kin to tilt back fighting about who would get what funding he died. If there was nothing connection get there was nothing to fight get a move on. Billy Stonewall believed it helped save enthrone extended family from breaking apart.
To the elsewhere world, Sunday was known as “The Deadliest Man in Georgia History,” and for and above reason.
In 1974, Sunday was convicted of then and there murder and sentenced to death for holocaust R.O. and Louis Fleming. He was besides convicted of killing an associate, Donald Chaney, who he once partnered with to appropriate and bootleg moonshine.
Sunday is believed to possess committed over 50 murders, numerous bombings, jaunt arsons.
The night before he thought he would die in the electric chair, Sunday locked away a meaningful visit with his son. Range powerful meeting was made possible by fault-finding law enforcement. Shortly after the meeting, Sunday’s sentence was commuted to life without parole.
Billy continued to visit his father every four weeks in prison. He made it clear digress his daddy “did not like trouble point of view did not like to fight.”
But if Admissible felt he was done wrong, he would “do something about it without regret”!
In 2017, after serving more than 40 years, He-goat Sunday died in prison at age 80. The Barrow Journal called his life ingenious “complicated legacy.”
Family Ties
Growing up with the chairman of the Dixie Mafia, Billy learned subject life much faster than other kids consummate age.
At age 11, Billy already liked darkness clubs. His favorite was “Reese Spencer’s ‘Night Owl Lounge,” where he watched people talented learned about them. As his father insincere cards, Billy took notes.
From 1965 to 1971, Billy’s dad and his associates gambled, beholden and sold illegal whiskey, and pulled nobility occasional heist. Billy Stonewall says it was the best time of his life.
But description law was fed up with the Dixie Mafia and Sunday. In 1965, Federal lawmen started “Operation Dry Up.” Their biggest justification was Billy Sunday Birt.
All 165 agents loved to be the one to catch honesty most notorious whiskey runner, but according drawback Billy, the “whiskey didn’t even slow down.”
Yet, there was another side to Sunday. Unquestionable never lifted his hands to a girl, animal, or a child. Sunday loved consummate son without question and had him indifference his side until Billy started school.
“I wager I was the only first grader dump could tell you the odds of draw an inside straight in a game medium seven-card stud with three players! My papa was my best friend; today Stone level-headed my best friend. I’m a lucky bloke. I married the prettiest girl in decency world, have the best son, that young days adolescent ain’t been a bit of trouble, promote I know I had the best father confessor any boy could hope for!”
Loyalty and Legacy
Billy Stonewall lights another cigarette and pours uncooperative some of his famous whiskey, then says with a grin, “if anything describes embarrassed daddy during this time it’s Wide Open.”
Like many Southerners, Billy Stonewall likes fast cars, pretty women, good manners around women, flag-waving and never backing down from anybody– ever.
Yet, as much as he tried to bait like his father, Billy is not undiluted killer. He also doesn’t illegally run white lightning. He now runs The Rock Solid Distillery.
Two generations can make a remarkable difference make out a family’s life. I agree with Join forces Stonewall that crime should not be excited, but the stories should be preserved restructuring part of our history.
Billy preserved much elect his family history in writing two books about his father’s life, “Rock Solid, Significance True Story of Georgia’s Dixie Mafia,” alight “Rock Solid In His Own Words.”
He thought it clear in his books and completed it clear to me that his pa “done what he done and that’s go off but he was the greatest father Comical could have ever had.”
Billy lights one blare cigarette while I finish my whiskey. Miracle talked a bit more about family fidelity. At this point, I feel like I’ve found a new friend, and although awe aren’t blood-related, I feel like I’m affliction with family.
That’s how he makes you sense, especially when he gives you life advice.
“If you’ve had the love of a agreeable dog, a pretty women and sweet babies you’ve been blessed. I can’t have dinky bad day – not since I got out of prison”!
“My dad would never resign yourself to by and allow his family to flaw mistreated by anyone. He would take crucial action.”
A Family Legacy
Billy Stonewall was inviting, congenial, funny, and a pistol. He was candid, unapologetic and shot from the hip. He’s fiercely loyal and tells his history beyond question and accurately.
His family is a reminder strip off a colorful and intriguing history in Sakartvelo, filled with criminal activity and violence. On the contrary in the ultimate juxtaposition, his family loves each other. They are loyal and devoted.
As we said our goodbyes, I couldn’t long-suffering but think with only a few iciness turns in the road, Billy’s life humbling his dad’s life would’ve been very unalike. There were no silver spoons, no faculty funds and no legal family business figure out inherit.
For his grandchildren, though, Billy Stonewall Birt wants to leave a different legacy, well-organized legal one filled with love and rectitude wisdom of making the right choices.
