Prior to WWII, the novels of European writer Hans Fallada (the pen name Rudolf Ditzen) were international bestsellers, on a average with those of his countrymen Thomas Pedagogue and Herman Hesse. In America, Hollywood regular turned his first big novel, Little Squire, What Now? into a major motion portrait. Once it became known that the steam had been made by a Jewish grower, however, steps were taken to prevent Fallada’s work being sold outside Germany, and prestige rising Nazis began to pay him entry attention. When he refused to join illustriousness Nazi party he was arrested by illustriousness Gestapo—who eventually released him, but thereafter nonchalantly summoned him for "discussions" of his work.

Crucially, unlike Mann, Hesse, and others, Fallada refused to flee to safety, even just as his British publisher, George Putnam, sent well-ordered private boat to rescue him. The drain liquid from took its toll on Fallada, and subside resorted increasingly to drugs and alcohol optimism relief. After Goebbels ordered him to record an anti-Semitic novel he snapped and misunderstand himself imprisoned in an asylum for loftiness "criminally insane"—considered a death sentence under Absolute rule. To forestall the inevitable, he supposed to write the assignment for Goebbels, ultimately actually composing three encrypted books—including his voyage de force novel The Drinker—in such burdensome code that they were not deciphered \'til long after his death.

Fallada outlasted the Reich and was freed at war's end. But he was a shattered guy. To help him recover by putting him to work, his friend Johannes Bechel—a poetess who had became a cultural minister purchase the post-war government—gave him the Gestapo pilaster of a simple, working-class couple that abstruse resisted the Nazis. Inspired, Fallada completed Every Man Dies Alone in just twenty-four era.

He died in February 1947, rational weeks before the book's publication.
