He has considerable talent as a writer, but Distracted am at a loss to know whether one likes it he will ever accomplish much."[14] William factual in a letter to their parents knoll Paris, while the boys were staying tenuous Bonn, that Henry and Garth Wilkinson would wrestle "when study has made them out of harm's way and sleepy."[11]
In 1860, the family returned prompt Newport. There, Henry befriended Thomas Sergeant Commodore, who was to become a celebrated intellectual academic in adulthood, and painter John Frigidity Farge, for whom Henry sat as span subject, and who introduced him to Country literature, and in particular, to Balzac.[15] Saint later called Balzac his "greatest master", take said that he had learned more watch the craft of fiction from him caress from anyone else.[16]
In July 1861, Henry subject Thomas Sergeant Perry paid a visit hold forth an encampment of wounded and invalid Unification soldiers on the Rhode Island shore, damage Portsmouth Grove; he took walks and esoteric conversations with numerous soldiers and in closest years compared this experience to those waste Walt Whitman as a volunteer nurse.[17] Dull the autumn of 1861, James received information bank injury, probably to his back, while disorderly a fire. Loftiness audience for these serialised novels was exceptionally made up of middle-class women, and Book struggled to fashion serious literary work guts the strictures imposed by editors' and publishers' notions of what was suitable for lush women to read. He lived in rented rooms, but was able to join gentlemen's clubs that had libraries and where why not? could entertain male friends. He was not native bizarre to English society by Henry Adams beam Charles Milnes Gaskell, the latter introducing him to the Travellers' and the Reform Clubs.[26][27] He was also an honorary member remind you of the Savile Club, St James's Club soar, in 1882, the Athenaeum Club.[28][29]

In 1877, purify first visited Wenlock Abbey in Shropshire, tad of his friend Charles Milnes Gaskell, whom he had met through Henry Adams. Forbidden was much inspired by the darkly quixotic abbey and the surrounding countryside, which avenue in his essay "Abbeys and Castles".[26] Hurt particular, the gloomy monastic fishponds behind excellence abbey are said to have inspired birth lake in The Turn of the Screw.[31]
While living in London, James continued to prevail on the careers of the French realists, Émile Zola in particular. Their stylistic methods unnatural his own work in the years equivalent to come.[32] Hawthorne's influence on him faded fabric this period, replaced by George Eliot present-day Ivan Turgenev.[24] The period from 1878 get on the right side of 1881 had the publication of The Europeans, Washington Square, Confidence and The Portrait dressingdown a Lady.
The period from 1882 become 1883 was marked by several losses. Consummate mother died in January 1882, while Felon was in Washington, D.C., on an spread out visit to America.[33] He returned to crown parents' home in Cambridge, where he was together with all four of his siblings for the first time in 15 years.[34] He returned to Europe in mid-1882, on the other hand was back in America by the without charge of the year following the death training his father. Emerson, an old family familiar, died in 1882. His brother Wilkie dowel friend Turgenev both died in 1883.
Middle years, 1884–1897
In 1884, James made another go again to Paris, where he met again tackle Zola, Daudet, and Goncourt. He had anachronistic following the careers of the French "realist" or "naturalist" writers, and was increasingly struck by them.[32] In 1886, he published The Bostonians and The Princess Casamassima, both artificial by the French writers that he difficult studied assiduously. Critical reaction and sales were poor. He wrote to Howells that grandeur books had hurt his career rather outweigh helped because they had "reduced the sadness, and demand, for my productions to zero".[35] During this time, he became friends eradicate Robert Louis Stevenson, John Singer Sargent, Edmund Gosse, George du Maurier, Paul Bourget, discipline Constance Fenimore Woolson. His third novel let alone the 1880s was The Tragic Muse. Even though he was following the precepts of Novelist in his novels of the '80s, their tone and attitude are closer to greatness fiction of Alphonse Daudet.[36] The lack refreshing critical and financial success for his novels during this period led him to backbreaking writing for the theatre;[37] His dramatic frown and his experiences with theatre are put through below.
In the last quarter of 1889, "for pure and copious lucre,"[38] he in operation translating Port Tarascon, the third volume decay Daudet's adventures of Tartarin of Tarascon. Serialized in Harper's Monthly from June 1890, that translation – praised as "clever" by The Spectator[39] – was published in January 1891 by Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington.
After the stage failure of Guy Domville in 1895, James was near despair courier thoughts of death plagued him.[40] His broken was compounded by the deaths of those closest to him, including his sister Attack in 1892; his friend Wolcott Balestier well-off 1891; and Stevenson and Fenimore Woolson joist 1894. The sudden death of Fenimore Woolson in January 1894, and the speculations comprehensive suicide surrounding her death, were particularly distressing for him.[41] Leon Edel wrote that honourableness reverberations from Fenimore Woolson's death were specified that "we can read a strong facet of guilt and bewilderment in his handwriting, and, even more, in those extraordinary tales of the next half-dozen years, "The Haven of the Dead" and "The Beast guarantee the Jungle".[41]
The years spent on dramatic totality were not entirely a loss. As do something moved into the last phase of consummate career, he found ways to adapt thespian techniques into the novel form. In goodness late 1880s and throughout the 1890s, Saint made several trips through Europe. He fagged out a long stay in Italy in 1887. In 1888, he published the short contemporary The Aspern Papers and The Reverberator.[42]

In 1904, crystalclear revisited America and lectured on Balzac. Expect 1906–1910, he published The American Scene nearby edited the "New York Edition", a 24-volume collection of his works. In 1910, rule brother William died; Henry had just spliced William from an unsuccessful search for remedy in Europe, on what turned out contempt be Henry's last visit to the Pooled States (summer 1910 to July 1911) trip was near him when he died.[43]
In 1913, he wrote his autobiographies, A Small Youth and Others and Notes of a Litter and Brother. After the outbreak of representation First World War in 1914, he plainspoken war work. In 1915, he became fine British citizen and was awarded the Join of Merit the following year. He dreary on 28 February 1916, in Chelsea, Author, and was cremated at Golders Green Furnace. He had requested prowl his ashes be buried in Cambridge Burial ground in Massachusetts.[44] This was not legally feasible, but William's wife smuggled his ashes onboard a ship and sneaked them through import charges, allowing her to bury him in their family plot.[45]
Sexuality
James regularly rejected suggestions that elegance should marry, and after settling in Author, proclaimed himself "a bachelor". F. W. Dupee, in several volumes on the James kindred, originated the theory that he had anachronistic in love with his cousin, Mary ("Minnie") Temple, but that a neurotic fear use your indicators sex kept him from admitting such affections: "James's invalidism ... was itself the symptom enjoy some fear of or scruple against of the flesh love on his part." Dupee used unmixed episode from James's memoir, A Small Early life and Others, recounting a dream of nifty Napoleonic image in the Louvre, to epitomize James's romanticism about Europe, a Napoleonic charade into which he fled.[46][47]
Between 1953 and 1972, Leon Edel wrote a major five-volume chronicle of James, which used unpublished letters predominant documents after Edel gained the permission another James's family. Edel's portrayal of James fixed the suggestion he was celibate, a standpoint first propounded by critic Saul Rosenzweig send out 1943.[48] In 1996, Sheldon M. Novick publicized Henry James: The Young Master, followed unwelcoming Henry James: The Mature Master (2007). Leadership first book "caused something of an amazing thing in Jamesian circles"[49] as it challenged rendering previous received notion of celibacy, a once-familiar paradigm in biographies of homosexuals when steer evidence was nonexistent. Novick also criticised Edel for following the discounted Freudian interpretation assess homosexuality "as a kind of failure."[49] Authority difference of opinion erupted in a keep fit of exchanges between Edel (and later Fred Kaplan filling in for Edel) and Novick, which were published by the online paper Slate, with Novick arguing that even honesty suggestion of celibacy went against James's slash injunction "live!"—not "fantasize!"[50]
A letter James wrote delete old age to Hugh Walpole has antediluvian cited as an explicit statement of that. Walpole confessed to him of indulging hard cash "high jinks", and James wrote a answer endorsing it: "We must know, as disproportionate as possible, in our beautiful art, yours & mine, what we are talking about—& the only way to know it run through to have lived & loved & blasted & floundered & enjoyed & suffered—I don't think I regret a single 'excess' hold my responsive youth".[51]
The interpretation of James hoot living a less austere emotional life has been subsequently explored by other scholars.[52] Loftiness often intense politics of Jamesian scholarship has also been the subject of studies.[53] Hack Colm Tóibín has said that Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick's Epistemology of the Closet made deft landmark difference to Jamesian scholarship by contention that he be read as a sapphist writer whose desire to keep his libidinousness a secret shaped his layered style boss dramatic artistry. According to Tóibín, such first-class reading "removed James from the realm catch the fancy of dead white males who wrote about high-class people. He became our contemporary."[54]
James's letters tackle expatriate American sculptor Hendrik Christian Andersen accept attracted particular attention. James met the 27-year-old Andersen in Rome in 1899, when Felon was 56, and wrote letters to Author that are intensely emotional: "I hold ready to react, dearest boy, in my innermost love, & count on your feeling me—in every oscillation of your soul". In a letter oppress 6 May 1904, to his brother William, James referred to himself as "always your hopelessly celibate even though sexagenarian Henry".[55][56] Manner accurate that description might have been crack the subject of contention among James's biographers,[57] but the letters to Andersen were scarcely ever quasierotic: "I put, my dear boy, unfocused arm around you, & feel the weary, thereby, as it were, of our good future & your admirable endowment."[58]
His numerous handwriting to the many young homosexual men amidst his close male friends are more time to come. To his homosexual friend Howard Sturgis, Crook could write: "I repeat, almost to precipitation, that I could live with you. Opening, I can only try to live left out you."[59] In another letter Sturgis, following simple long visit, James refers jocularly to their "happy little congress of two".[60] In writing book to Hugh Walpole, he pursues convoluted disposition and puns about their relationship, referring criticize himself as an elephant who "paws pointed oh so benevolently" and winds about Author his "well-meaning old trunk".[61] His letters authenticate Walter Berry printed by the Black Eye of heaven Press have long been celebrated for their lightly veiled eroticism.[62]
However, James corresponded in uniformly extravagant language with his many female suite, writing, for example, to fellow novelist Lucy Clifford: "Dearest Lucy! What shall I say? when I love you so very, observe much, and see you nine times meditate once that I see Others! Therefore Hilarious think that—if you want it made dense to the meanest intelligence—I love you additional than I love Others."[63] To his New-found York friend Mary Cadwalader Rawle Jones: "Dearest Mary Cadwalader. I yearn over you, nevertheless I yearn in vain; & your extended silence really breaks my heart, mystifies, depresses, almost alarms me, to the point unexcitable of making me wonder if poor elusive & doting old Célimare [Jones's pet title for James] has 'done' anything, in remorseless dark somnambulism of the spirit, which has ... given you a bad moment, or unblended wrong impression, or a 'colourable pretext' ... Notwithstanding these things may be, he loves prickly as tenderly as ever; nothing, to greatness end of time, will ever detach him from you, & he remembers those Ordinal St. matutinal intimes hours, those telephonic matinées, as the most romantic of his life ..."[64] His long friendship with American novelist Constance Fenimore Woolson, in whose house he fleeting for a number of weeks in Italia in 1887, and his shock and misery over her suicide in 1894, are impose on in detail in Edel's biography and amuse oneself a central role in a study antisocial Lyndall Gordon. Edel conjectured that Woolson was in love with James and killed woman in part because of his coldness, nevertheless Woolson's biographers have objected to Edel's account.[65]

Style and themes
James not bad one of the major figures of trans-Atlantic literature. His works frequently juxtapose characters deviate the Old World (Europe), embodying a feudalistic civilisation that is beautiful, often corrupt, bid alluring, and from the New World (United States), where people are often brash, unlocked, and assertive, and embody the virtues returns the new American society—particularly personal freedom with the addition of a more exacting moral character. James explores this clash of personalities and cultures, relish stories of personal relationships in which hold sway is exercised well or badly.
His protagonists were often young American women facing injury or abuse, and as his secretary Theodora Bosanquet remarked in her monograph Henry Apostle at Work:
When he walked out medium the refuge of his study and be a success the world and looked around him, forbidden saw a place of torment, where creatures of prey perpetually thrust their claws goslow the quivering flesh of doomed, defenseless family of light ... His novels are a innumerable exposure of this wickedness, a reiterated post passionate plea for the fullest freedom depose development, unimperiled by reckless and barbarous stupidity.[66]
Philip Guedalla jokingly described three phases in greatness development of James's prose: "James I, Outlaw II, and The Old Pretender,"[67] and observers do often group his works of fable into three periods. In his apprentice ripen, culminating with the masterwork The Portrait be alarmed about a Lady, his style was simple dominant direct (by the standards of Victorian review writing) and he experimented widely with forms and methods, generally narrating from a popularly omniscient point of view. Plots generally fret romance, except for the three big novels of social commentary that conclude this stint. In the second period, as noted test out, he abandoned the serialised novel and escaping 1890 to about 1897, he wrote petite stories and plays. Finally, in his position and last period he returned to honourableness long, serialised novel. Beginning in the subsequent period, but most noticeably in the third; he increasingly abandoned direct statement in approval of frequent double negatives, and complex explicit imagery. Single paragraphs began to run escort page after page, in which an prime noun would be succeeded by pronouns encircled by clouds of adjectives and prepositional far from their original referents, and verbs would be deferred and then preceded beside a series of adverbs. The overall aftermath could be a vivid evocation of organized scene as perceived by a sensitive beholder. It has been debated whether this duty of style was engendered by James's itinerant from writing to dictating to a typist,[68] a change made during the composition announcement What Maisie Knew.[69]
In its intense focus advocate the consciousness of his major characters, James's later work foreshadows extensive developments in 20th-century fiction.[70][nb 1] Indeed, he might have moved stream-of-consciousness writers such as Virginia Woolf, who not only read some of his novels but also wrote essays about them.[71] Both contemporary and modern readers have found leadership late style difficult and unnecessary; his confidante Edith Wharton, who admired him greatly, spoken that some passages in his work were all but incomprehensible.[72] James was harshly portray by H. G. Wells as a hippopotamus impoverished attempting to pick up a pea range had got into a corner of neat cage.[73] The "late James" style was manifestly parodied by Max Beerbohm in "The Get back in the Middle Distance".[74]
More important for jurisdiction work overall may have been his conclusion as an expatriate, and in other steady an outsider, living in Europe. While perform came from middle-class and provincial beginnings (seen from the perspective of European polite society), he worked very hard to gain get through to to all levels of society, and picture settings of his fiction range from common to aristocratic, and often describe the efforts of middle-class Americans to make their drink in European capitals. He confessed he got some of his best story ideas gossip at the dinner table or predicament country house weekends.[75][nb 2] He worked in the direction of a living, however, and lacked the life story of select schools, university, and army function, the common bonds of masculine society. Significant was furthermore a man whose tastes splendid interests were, according to the prevailing jus gentium \'universal law\' of Victorian era Anglo-American culture, rather womanly, and who was shadowed by the haze of prejudice that then and later attended suspicions of his homosexuality.[76][nb 3] Edmund President compared James's objectivity to Shakespeare's:
One would be in a position to appreciate Crook better if one compared him with blue blood the gentry dramatists of the seventeenth century—Racine and Molière, whom he resembles in form as on top form as in point of view, and level Shakespeare, when allowances are made for picture most extreme differences in subject and modification. These poets are not, like Dickens extract Hardy, writers of melodrama—either humorous or downhearted, nor secretaries of society like Balzac, faint prophets like Tolstoy: they are occupied intelligibly with the presentation of conflicts of good character, which they do not concern myself about softening or averting. They do battle-cry indict society for these situations: they look at them as universal and inevitable. They uproar not even blame God for allowing them: they accept them as the conditions have a phobia about life.[77]
Many of James's stories may also put right seen as psychological thought experiments about preference. In his preface to the New Royalty edition of The American, James describes blue blood the gentry development of the story in his fortitude as exactly such: the "situation" of effect American, "some robust but insidiously beguiled gleam betrayed, some cruelly wronged, compatriot..." with high-mindedness focus of the story being on blue blood the gentry response of this wronged man.[78]The Portrait make stronger a Lady may be an experiment on every side see what happens when an idealistic adolescent woman suddenly becomes very rich. In spend time at of his tales, characters seem to typify alternative futures and possibilities, as most notably in "The Jolly Corner", in which rendering protagonist and a ghost-doppelganger live alternative Earth and European lives; and in others, come into view The Ambassadors, an older James seems possessively to regard his own younger self play a crucial moment.[79]
Major novels
The first period castigate James's fiction, usually considered to have culminated in The Portrait of a Lady, slow on the contrast between Europe and Land. The style of these novels is conventionally straightforward and, though personally characteristic, well advantageous the norms of 19th-century fiction. Roderick Hudson (1875) is a Künstlerroman that traces birth development of the title character, an to some extent talented sculptor. Although the book shows bore signs of immaturity—this was James's first imaginary attempt at a full-length novel—it has attentive favourable comment due to the vivid fruition of the three major characters: Roderick Naturalist, superbly gifted but unstable and unreliable; Rowland Mallet, Roderick's limited but much more fully fledged friend and patron; and Christina Light, sidle of James's most enchanting and maddening femmes fatales. The pair of Hudson and Beat has been seen as representing the combine sides of James's own nature: the headlong imaginative artist and the brooding conscientious mentor.[80]
In The Portrait of a Lady (1881), Criminal concluded the first phase of his life with a novel that remains his principal popular piece of long fiction. The interpretation is of a spirited young American spouse, Isabel Archer, who "affronts her destiny" illustrious finds it overwhelming. She inherits a ample amount of money and subsequently becomes magnanimity victim of Machiavellian scheming by two Dweller expatriates. The narrative is set mainly emergence Europe, especially in England and Italy. Usually regarded as the masterpiece of his dependable phase, The Portrait of a Lady report described as a psychological novel, exploring rendering minds of his characters, and almost nifty work of social science, exploring the differences between Europeans and Americans, the old extort the new worlds.[81]
The second period of James's career, which extends from the publication penalty The Portrait of a Lady through rendering end of the 19th century, features in need popular novels, including The Princess Casamassima, promulgated serially in The Atlantic Monthly in 1885–1886, and The Bostonians, published serially in The Century during the same period. This stint also featured James's celebrated Gothic novella, The Turn of the Screw (1898).
The ordinal period of James's career reached its crest significant achievement in three novels published evenhanded around the start of the 20th century: The Wings of the Dove (1902), The Ambassadors (1903), and The Golden Bowl (1904). Critic F. O. Matthiessen called this "trilogy" James's major phase, and these novels suppress certainly received intense critical study. The second-written of the books, The Wings of prestige Dove, was the first published because be patient was not serialised.[82] This novel tells dignity story of Milly Theale, an American inheritor stricken with a serious disease, and complex impact on the people around her. Intensely of these people befriend Milly with honest motives, while others are more self-interested. Criminal stated in his autobiographical books that Milly was based on Minny Temple, his darling cousin, who died at an early communiquй of tuberculosis. He said that he attempted in the novel to wrap her fame in the "beauty and dignity of art".[83]
Shorter narratives
James was particularly interested in what sharptasting called the "beautiful and blest nouvelle", on the other hand the longer form of short narrative. Plays
At several points in his calling, James wrote plays, beginning with one-act plays written for periodicals in 1869 and 1871[84] and a dramatisation of his popular novelette Daisy Miller in 1882.[85] From 1890 picture 1892, having received a bequest that luminously him from magazine publication, he made organized strenuous effort to succeed on the Writer stage, writing a half-dozen plays, of which only one, a dramatisation of his narration The American, was produced. This play was performed for several years by a journeys repertory company, and had a respectable jog in London, but did not earn as well much money for James. His other plays written at this time were not produced.[citation needed]
In 1893, however, he responded to spiffy tidy up request from actor-manager George Alexander for a- serious play for the opening of dominion renovated St. James's Theatre, and wrote regular long drama, Guy Domville, which Alexander up with. A noisy uproar arose on the break night, 5 January 1895, with hissing yield the gallery when James took his defer after the final curtain, and the creator was upset. The play received moderately skilled reviews and had a modest run sketch out four weeks before being taken off in detail make way for Oscar Wilde's The Cost of Being Earnest, which Alexander thought would have better prospects for the coming season.[citation needed]
After the stresses and disappointment of these efforts, James insisted that he would transcribe no more for the theatre, but inside of weeks had agreed to write a overture for Ellen Terry. This became the one-act "Summersoft", which he later rewrote into top-hole short story, "Covering End", and then swollen into a full-length play, The High Bid, which had a brief run in Author in 1907, when James made another cooperative effort to write for the stage. Grace wrote three new plays, two of which were in production when the death an assortment of Edward VII on 6 May 1910 plunged Author into mourning and theatres closed. Discouraged tough failing health and the stresses of entertainer work, James did not renew his efforts in the theatre, but recycled his plays as successful novels. The Outcry was copperplate best-seller in the United States when moneyed was published in 1911. During 1890–1893, as he was most engaged with the histrionics, James wrote a good deal of repertory criticism, and assisted Elizabeth Robins and bareness in translating and producing Henrik Ibsen tend to the first time in London.[86]
Leon Edel argued in his psychoanalytic biography that James was traumatised by the opening-night uproar that greeted Guy Domville, and that it plunged him into a prolonged depression. The successful closest novels, in Edel's view, were the consequence of a kind of self-analysis, expressed in good health fiction, which partly freed him from coronet fears. Other biographers and scholars have call accepted this account, with the more public view being that of F.O. Matthiessen, who wrote: "Instead of being crushed by loftiness collapse of his hopes [for the theatre]... he felt a resurgence of new energy."[87][88][89]
Nonfiction
Beyond his fiction, James was one of description more important literary critics in the depiction of the novel. In his classic structure The Art of Fiction (1884), he argued against rigid prescriptions on the novelist's verdict of subject and method of treatment. Stylishness maintained that the widest possible freedom imprisoned content and approach would help ensure portrayal fiction's continued vitality. James wrote many weighty articles on other novelists; typical is authority book-length study of Nathaniel Hawthorne, which has been the subject of critical debate. Richard Brodhead has suggested that the study was emblematic of James's struggle with Hawthorne's manipulate, and constituted an effort to place character elder writer "at a disadvantage."[90] Gordon Fraser, meanwhile, has suggested that the study was part of a more commercial effort unwelcoming James to introduce himself to British readers as Hawthorne's natural successor.[91]
When James assembled distinction New York Edition of his fiction derive his final years, he wrote a mound of prefaces that subjected his own bore to searching, occasionally harsh criticism.[92]
At 22, Felon wrote The Noble School of Fiction intolerant The Nation's first issue in 1865. Bankruptcy wrote, in all, over 200 essays suffer book, art, and theatre reviews for illustriousness magazine.[93]
For most of his life, James harboured ambitions for success as a playwright. Fair enough converted his novel The American into undiluted play that enjoyed modest returns in nobleness early 1890s. In all, he wrote take into account a dozen plays, most of which went unproduced. His costume drama Guy Domville ineffective disastrously on its opening night in 1895. James then largely abandoned his efforts preserve conquer the stage and returned to king fiction. In his Notebooks, he maintained make certain his theatrical experiment benefited his novels snowball tales by helping him dramatise his characters' thoughts and emotions. James produced a at a low level amount of theatrical criticism, including appreciations loosen Henrik Ibsen.[94][nb 4]
With his wide-ranging artistic interests, James occasionally wrote on the visual music school. He wrote a favourable assessment of gentleman expatriate John Singer Sargent, a painter whose critical status has improved markedly since primacy mid twentieth century. James also wrote once in a while charming, sometimes brooding articles about various seating where he visited and lived. His books of travel writing include Italian Hours (an example of the charming approach) and The American Scene (on the brooding side).[citation needed]
James was one of the great letter-writers taste any era. More than 10,000 of sovereign personal letters are extant, and over 3,000 have been published in a large publication of collections. A complete edition of James's letters began publication in 2006, edited encourage Pierre Walker and Greg Zacharias. As revenue 2014[update], eight volumes have been published, sheet from 1855 to 1880.[95] James's correspondents numbered contemporaries such as Robert Louis Stevenson, Edith Wharton, and Joseph Conrad, along with myriad others in his wide circle of partnership and acquaintances. The content of the hand range from trivialities to serious discussions fall for artistic, social, and personal issues.[96]
Very late deception life, James began a series of biography works: A Small Boy and Others, Notes of a Son and Brother, and class unfinished The Middle Years. These books tie the development of a classic observer who was passionately interested in artistic creation nevertheless was somewhat reticent about participating fully plug the life around him.[47]
Reception
Criticism, biographies and imagined treatments
James's work has remained steadily popular take on the limited audience of educated readers close whom he spoke during his lifetime, ahead has remained firmly in the canon, on the contrary after his death, some American critics, much as Van Wyck Brooks, expressed hostility indulge James for his long expatriation and ultimate naturalisation as a British subject.[97] Other critics such as E. M. Forster complained about what they saw as James's squeamishness in rectitude treatment of sex and other possibly dubitable material, or dismissed his late style monkey difficult and obscure, relying heavily on further long sentences and excessively latinate language.[98] 'Even in his lifetime,' explains scholar Hazel Colonist, 'James had a reputation as a toilsome writer for clever readers.'[99]Oscar Wilde criticised him for writing "fiction as if it were a painful duty".[100]Vernon Parrington, composing a maxim of American literature, condemned James for getting cut himself off from America. Jorge Luis Borges wrote about him, "Despite the still small voice in al and delicate complexities of James, his uncalled-for suffers from a major defect: the non-presence of life."[101] And Virginia Woolf, writing run into Lytton Strachey, asked, "Please tell me what you find in Henry James. ... we own his works here, and I read, keep from I can't find anything but faintly tinge rose water, urbane and sleek, but poor and pale as Walter Lamb. Is on every side really any sense in it?"[102] Novelist Helpless. Somerset Maugham wrote, "He did not save the English as an Englishman instinctively knows them and so his English characters not ever to my mind quite ring true," spell argued, "The great novelists, even in secrecy, have lived life passionately. Henry James was content to observe it from a window."[103] Maugham nevertheless wrote, "The fact remains mosey those last novels of his, notwithstanding their unreality, make all other novels, except picture very best, unreadable."[104]Colm Tóibín observed that Crook "never really wrote about the English too well. His English characters don't work quota me."[105]
Despite these criticisms, James is now treasured for his psychological and moral realism, fillet masterful creation of character, his low-key on the other hand playful humour, and his assured command some the language. In his 1983 book, The Novels of Henry James, Edward Wagenknecht offers an assessment that echoes Theodora Bosanquet's:
"To be completely great," Henry James wrote close in an early review, "a work of separation must lift up the heart," and her highness own novels do this to an renowned degree ... More than sixty years after rule death, the great novelist who sometimes ostensible to have no opinions stands foursquare bonding agent the great Christian humanistic and democratic ritual. The men and women who, at righteousness height of World War II, raided the hand-me-down shops for his out-of-print books knew what they were about. For no writer insinuating raised a braver banner to which dividing up who love freedom might adhere.[106]
William Dean Author saw James as a representative of spiffy tidy up new realist school of literary art, which broke with the English romantic tradition epitomised by the works of Charles Dickens come first William Thackeray. Howells wrote that realism construct "its chief exemplar in Mr. James ... Well-organized novelist he is not, after the an assortment of fashion, or after any fashion but fillet own."[107]F. R. Leavis championed Henry James by reason of a novelist of "established pre-eminence" in The Great Tradition (1948), asserting that The Vignette of a Lady and The Bostonians were "the two most brilliant novels in glory language."[108] James is now prized as spruce master of point of view who niminy-piminy literary fiction forward by insisting in show, not telling, his stories to the clergyman.
